Dan’s Thoughts for Today

Dan said, “I’m ready to begin to share some of my thoughts.  There is so much I want to say, and I don’t even know how to begin.”  As Dan begins to talk, I write down the things Dan wants you to know are on his heart.  Each day I will post them on the blog godschildrenblog.wordpress.com under the Category of “A Word from Dan.”

Dan said, “Philippians 1:18c-21 pretty well expresses how I feel.”

” Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

My principal prayer is that I will have sufficient courage that Christ will be exalted in my behavior as well as my body…whether I live or die…to stand firm to the end.  That’s really hard for all of us I think…to come to grips with the fact that we really are mortal. — Dan

When You Walk Through the Fire

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior . . . Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” Isaiah 43:2,3,5

Without God’s promises, we could not manage.  We celebrate the good moments, and go on without a clue as to what may lie ahead.  I felt like the raging waters were going to drag me under yesterday, but Scott and Michelle were here to keep me steady.

Dan had a good night, and at the moment feels okay. I wonder what today holds…will the heavy fog evaporate to let us view the beauty outside our window?  Will Dan be able to sit up, eat enough, be awake much of the day?  Such simple things we used to take for granted.

This morning, we have added courage because of what we heard from a dear brother far away — “At this point you remain my living examples, of true Christian conduct. If it were up to me, i would not let you endure so much pain and struggle. But perhaps God is saying: ‘Dan and Anne, you are my children and I love you so much, and I am with you every step of the way…. but I have other smaller children that I love too, and they need to learn from you how to pass through difficulties and pains in life; there would be no way for Me to show them if there wouldn’t be people like you and others like you, that haven’t abandoned Me in struggle.’ ”  We are so blessed to have encouraging words like that.  God is good. — Anne and Dan

Only One Among Many

Unless you or one of your loved ones has had cancer, you can’t begin to understand the daily struggle that monster brings into one’s life.  We have a much deeper appreciation for those who have walked this path before us.  Dan is only one among thousands who battle daily with a malignant growth.

Dan had a fine day yesterday, but has not felt well most of today – diarrhea again, nauseated, can’t stand for his skin to be touched, extremely exhausted, a rash on his neck — all resulting from the poison put into his body to try to kill the enemy who is determined to claim his body.

His right leg and cancer mass are swelling again causing pain.  Chemo works on only 5% of the type sarcoma cancer Dan has.  It is such a rare type of cancer that there is very little information about it.  The doctors are doing the best they can…they just don’t know what will work.

Today, Dr. Anderson, Dan’s oncologist, sent Dan to the local ER for a CBC where a Dr. took a hands on look at Dan to see if there is anything that needs further treatment.  He was alarmed at Dan’s platelet count until he spoke by phone with Dr. Anderson.  Dr. Anderson told the ER doc, “Oh, that is a good count.  That is exactly where I’d expect it to be after the chemo Dan had last week.”

Dan was invited to return Friday during the hours when that ER doc is on duty.  The nurse told Dan, “Oh, you must be special.  He seldom asks an ER patient to return to specifically see him!”

The apostle Peter instructs, “The purpose of these struggles is to test your faith.  Your faith is more precious than gold.  Gold will be destroyed, but after your faith is tested through fire, it will last.  When Jesus Christ is revealed, your faith will be praise, glory and honor for Him . . . So, get your minds ready.  Be alert.  Put your hope completely upon the gracious love that you will receive when Jesus Christ appears (1 Peter 1: 7, 13-SEB).”  Our minds are the battlefields in which Satan desires destroying Christians.

The journey is long, the path is rocky, but God is with us.  Your prayers, being sent from around the world, are helping us keep our minds focused on God and keeping God’s attention on Dan 24 hours a day. Thank you.  — Anne and Dan
