You HAVE to Take Responsibility for Your Health!

Allergies to the medication has caused Dan to spiral downward the last couple of days – he can barely walk, falls asleep when eating, has difficulty talking or concentrating, blood pressure is in the 90’s, has a terrible cough.  I decided to look up the side effects of Furosemide (generic for Lasix).  Guess what! Dan is allergic to sulfa, and has gout.  People who are allergic to sulfa, or who have gout should be carefully tested when taking Furosemide.  People who have -” kidney disease; liver disease; gout; lupus; diabetes; or an allergy to sulfa drugs should not take Lasix/Furosemide.
Our new wonderful Personal Physician has not returned our phone call of Monday or today.  I thought I was very clear that this is an emergency.  Maybe she had other patients with greater emergencies?  In the morning, Dan will not take his daily dose of Furosemide, or the Spironolactone / Aldactone.  “If you develop any of the following symptoms, notify your doctor immediately: muscle weakness, irregular or slow heartbeat.” is what the medication says.

Not only is it a diuretic, Aldactone it is used to lower blood pressure, and raise low potassium levels. So, now we know!  The Dr. who prescribed this has gone to France to visit his mother.  Dr. Anne has consulted with Dr. Scott, and we are taking Mr. Dan off of both of these diuretics. We’ll have to find a different way to deal with the edema.
While we waited for the Dr. to call, we ate lunch at Mel’s a very famous diner here. It was a treat for Dan, but I was too worried about what was happening to Dan…slurring his speech, falling asleep with his hamburger in his hand.  We are thankful that I had presence of mind to look up the meds on line.  We pray that he will recover quickly.  The challenges seem to be increasing.  But God is still our heavenly Father, and He will see us through this…whatever happens we will be okay.  — Anne and Dan
