Dan Is Back with Us

Zeph. 3:17  “The Lord your God is with you.  He is mighty to save.  He will take delight in you.  He will quiet you with his love.  He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Medical treatment is finished.  Dan is lucid, still has a sense of humor.  After he walked slowly up the 12 steps to the front door. Dan said. “I did my Twelve Step Program today!”  He wants to live out his last days on earth with loved ones.  Our personal Social Worker and RN from Pathways Home Hospice Care began Dan’s care.  He sat in his recliner for long periods, had a nap, ate a good dinner.

Dan has a port in the side of his left ribs.   This attaches to a suction pump that drains off the fluid pressing on his heart. But it only has to be drained every 1 1/2 days.  We are grateful that he does not have to wear a pump all the time. At night, he has an oxygen machine.  The machine draws in air that is inside the house, purifies it, and sends oxygen to Dan through the tube resting under his nose.  There are 5 bottles of oxygen stored under our bed to use in case the machine fails. There is a sign on the front door announcing “NO SMOKING ALLOWED.  OXYGEN IN USE.”

When we have power outages here, we light candles so we can see. My first thought when I saw the oxygen tanks lying there was, “What a way to have a big send-off!”  Then I “heard” the words to the song, “Nearer My God to Thee.”  Now that Dan is back with me, my feelings are “numbing out” so I can be strong.  I see myself using humor to avoid my pain. Dan is calm, ready to begin a New Life

.  This is what he has been living for his entire life.  May God be praised.

We were blessed with phone calls and e-mails today.  Our son in law phoned so Kristen could talk with us.  Tim and Claudia called from Spain to say they will see us in mid-May.  Tom and Jaye are flying in Saturday to spend the afternoon with Dan.  Then they’ll fly back to Dallas.  Our son’s brother in law and his beautiful Russian wife brought Russian potato salad  for dinner tonight.  I had wonderful visits on Skype with Andrea and Zsuzsa.  In the midst of our earthly pain and sorrow, God keeps bringing us JOY.  — Anne and Dan
