Surprised by Joy

Thinking today would be a quiet day, we heard someone at the door.  It was Kevin Cox (dear friend for 30 years!) and his wife, Kim.  They let David Givens (also friend from Walnut Hill days 30 years ago!) know that Dan is very ill.  He came straight here.  We spent some precious time together…good medicine.  What a surprise!

Dan slept all night with the aid of a Morphine Time Release 30 mg tablet.  His meds are carefully supervised by the Hospice RN to ensure Dan is comfortable during his last days.  Dan slept a lot today, ate very little, is free of nausea, and was awake most of the evening.

I sent this to our supporters’ tonight – “Three weeks ago Dr. Jahan gently told us that Dan had weeks, not months to live.  At that time, a 5″+ sarcoma was pressing on Dan’s heart.  In the past week, Dan’s midsection grew from a pant size 36″ to a 40″ because of immense fluid accumulation from the middle of his chest down past his knees. Breathing, eating, walking are difficult.  Pain meds help control his pain. Since January, ’08, Dan has been subjected to 5 surgeries, 34 radiation treatments, and 2 rounds of chemo.

Memorial services will be held in Pacifica, CA, where our son and family worship.  About 10 days later, a memorial service will be held at RHCC, the congregation in Ft. Worth that helped us spend the last 8 years doing short term mission work in Romania, Africa, Holland, Russia, and Spain.  The last memorial service will be held in Hobart, OK, an area where many of Dan’s family live.  Burial will be in a country cemetery near Altus, OK, close to where Dan was born. In lieu of flowers, Dan is requesting donations to God’s Children – to help the abandoned children and elderly in Romania.

Dan is accepting that it is time to cease his labors in God’s earthly fields, and go Home when God calls his name.   It is Dan’s wish, and my desire, that I return to Sfantu Gheorghe, Romania, to carry on the work to which God called us after I have grieved my loss for awhile with family.

People came from Ghana, West Africa; Spain, Arkansas, California, North Carolina, Texas, Washington State, 100’s have sent e-mails,many called from Holland, Russia, Romania, Spain and the U.S. to say goodbye, and express their appreciation for the years Dan invested in their lives to help them become Christians, and also grow in the Lord.  Saturday our Texas son and daughter will arrive to say, “Goodbye.”  After that…only God knows.  We will let you know when Dan crosses over the River Jordan. Thank you for your prayers for peace and comfort for us and all who love Dan.” — Anne and Dan

It’s so hard to read the words…
It’s so hard to except that soon Dan will go Home…
    Yet: God is good!
