A Change in the Weather
A new day…with first snow to stay on the ground this winter in St. George, Covasna County, Transylvania, Romania. We expected the first snow to come in November. Surprise1 It came almost 3 months late.
A few children are skiing on the mountains in the distance. For the first time in years, the nation’s schools are closed due to heavy snow…the worst is in southern and eastern Romania. No travel to Bucharest — roads are blocked by snow in many areas..
(When schools ARE open, many classrooms are so cold…the children and teachers wear coats and caps to try to keep warm.) God’s Children is thankful for you who send warm clothes for these children.
What message do you see in this? There are many. It just depends, perhaps, on what you are ready to learn. What comes first to my mind is Matthew 24:35-37, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”
We can’t change the weather…but what do you need to change? God helps honest hearts find the way. — Anne
LST Brings Sports Camp to St. George
A youthful LST team, led by Mike and Shannon Plog and their amazing teens, conducted a sports camp at the Red Cross Building during the week of July 22-26. The camp was held from 10:00 to 11:30 AM and from 2 to 6 PM. This camp was structured a little differently than regular LST reading sessions. Instead of individual readers discussing passages one on one, the team conducted group reading and discussion sessions; would break for a game, and then return for another discussion session.
Each teen was responsible for planning a game, giving Shannon the rules and a supply list for the game, and leading the game. This was great training for them, and great fun for their friends in St. George. It has been a joy to see our teens in action and to see them developing into future Christian leaders! Well done, teenagers! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the work you have done. — Linda and Anne, St. George, Transylvania, Romania!

Elijah and the 900 Bibles
When the Plog LST (Let’s Start Talking) team was in St. George last year, they had dinner one night at HU-HUs, which is a place for children to play while parents relax. Shannon was snapping pictures of Elijah (a favorite pastime of hers). Elijah met and made friends with a little girl on the playground. The little girl’s mother noticed that Shannon was taking pictures of the two children and asked Shannon to post the pictures on Facebook so that she could see them.
Elijah and his Let’s Start Talking friend in St. George, Covasna County, Transylvania, RO
Shannon and the girl’s mother struck up a Facebook acquaintance. This year the little girl and her mother came to the first LST party. God’s Children had e-mailed every school librarian in St. George during the past year and had offered a Hungarian children’s Bible for every student in their schools.
Most librarians jumped at the chance and gave every student a Bible. In talking with the mother, Shannon found out that one of the school librarians had never received the e-mail. Nora, the librarian, requested the Bibles…and 900 children’s Bibles are now at her school waiting for the students to return from summer vacation.
All of this transpired because of a little boy who made a friend and a good mother who followed through on her promise to post pictures. God uses us all. Thank you, God, for Elijah who was chosen by you to put Bibles in the hands of 900 children.

God’s Gracious Provision

Youthful Enthusiasm Returns to St. George!
An LST team (Let’s Start Talking) with 9 members arrived in St. George Saturday, July 6. The large team led by Mike Plog and his wife, Shannon, consists of 4 adults and 4 teenaged workers. Of course, Elijah, the Plog’s 6 year old son is wearing his LST Team shirt. He’s got the shirt…he’s part of the Team (in training)!
The team first came to St. George last summer. They liked it so much that they were excited to return. With seven workers reading 7 hours a day, that is 49 hours of instruction a day, or 245 hours a week. Nineteen teenagers from St. George attended the organizational meeting on Monday, July 9, at the Red Cross Building and signed up to read. Now, there are 22 teens reading! Six adults also are reading. What a blessing!
THANK YOU to Mike, Shannon, Merle, Peggy, Andy, Brooke, Mariah, Jordan and Elijah for your generous gift of your time!
When In Rom…ania, Do As the Romanians Do! (Guest Writer, Carolyn Waters, visiting from Butler, Tennessee)
Our trip to beautiful Romania has been a real adventure thus far. After arriving in Sibiu and seeing some of the ancient architecture, we then were brought by car to St. George late at night. The weather was much like what we had left back in Boone, North Carolina…cold with a wintry mix of rain and snow.
The next day dawned clear, and we were off to Mikes School, where we spent the day with their hard-working librarian and other librarians from Covasna County. I am so impressed with their desire to inspire and motivate their students to work hard to achieve their fullest potential. Romania has a wonderful opportunity to achieve great things as a country, through it’s young people, it’s greatest resource!
Carolyn with Laszlo Kiss, Librarian, Mikes Kelemen School – Grades K – 12
We have met some of the wonderful people working for the Red Cross, Adolf the Executive Director, and Andrea, Project Manager, who work tirelessly for the good people of St George. I hope within the next few days to meet others, like Huni, Andrea and Robi, who I understand have made great contributions for the betterment of this wonderful community. Our desire in coming here was to bring some small help and encouragement to the people of St. George – believe me, it has been a great encouragement to us!
